Adolescents

Charles Dickens novel, A Tale of Two Cities, begins with the phrase, 'it was the best of times, it was the worst of times.' Perhaps this has never been more true than in the life of a teenager. This paradox frequently sums up their lives. They desire independence and yet still rely on their parents or caregiver. They struggle for self-identity but can easily get caught up in the identity of the group. They cycle between emotional highs and emotional lows. Unfortunately, it also becomes a time in which many of them struggle to the point where they need intervention.
Teens need a safe environment where they can 'keep it real' with an adult who is willing to do the same, and yet do it in a way the teens sees as collaborative and not adversarial. When this is accomplished, teens feel as though they have some control over their situation and that solutions are not just being prescribed to them. And, frequently they are able to develop solutions that are healthy and right and good. As young adults, it is beneficial for them to begin to work out some of their own solutions to life's problems in an environment that is safe and secure, yet challenging. Your teen can find resolution to the issues they face, and together we can make that happen.
